ArtPlantae began in 2002 as an Artists’ Herbarium and newsletter. Today it serves artists, naturalists and educators pursuing interests in botany, botanical art and environmental education in formal and informal learning environments. Its principal goal is to encourage an interest in plants through art, science and interpretation.
ArtPlantae managed ArtPlantae Books from 2006-2013. It now manages smaller shops on the Square Market and at 11 Main. Here you will find specialty titles such as the exhibition catalogs of contemporary botanical art by the American Society of Botanical Artists, independent titles like American Botanical Paintings: Native Plants of the Mid Atlantic and other items of interest to plant enthusiasts and artists.
As an independent small business and former member of the American Booksellers Association, ArtPlantae is a supporter of independent bookstores. It will continue to bring attention to interesting and helpful resources as an IndieBound affiliate. Purchases made online at independent bookstores through ArtPlantae’s IndieBound links will earn ArtPlantae a small amount of revenue and will support a fellow indie. Proceeds benefit ArtPlantae’s InterpretPlants™ program.

About Tania Marien
Tania has an Interdisciplinary Studies Master’s degree in Biology & Student Learning. She has introduced the public to plants and botanical art at environmental education events, botanical gardens, museums, private gardens, science programs and specialty garden shops. She leads hands-on activities at environmental education events and leads occasional in-class field trips at local elementary schools.
Tania was the founding editor of The Southern California Botanical Artist and the newsletter Artists’ Botany. The latter became the foundation for the ArtPlantae Today website. She has presented at the conferences of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and the American Society of Botanical Artists.
Interested in interpretive techniques about plants, investigating how people make meaning and how drawing can be used as a learning tool, Tania explores these topics at ArtPlantae and in her practice teaching in informal learning environments.

Exhibition Catalogs at ArtPlantae
ArtPlantae is proud to introduce new audiences to the exhibition catalogs of the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) and the Alisa and Isaac M. Sutton Collection. Both catalogs are available at ArtPlantae’s store on the Square Market.
A portion of each sale of an ASBA catalog is donated to the American Society of Botanical Artists, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting public awareness of contemporary botanical art, to honoring its traditions, and to furthering its development. Learn more about the ASBA at http://www.asba-art.org.
