ArtPlantae began in 2002 as an Artists’ Herbarium and newsletter. Today it serves artists, naturalists and educators pursuing interests in botany, botanical art and environmental education in formal and informal learning environments. Its principal goal is to encourage an interest in plants through art, science and interpretation.
What do people think about plants?
How do people interact with plants?
Where can one find plants in an urban setting?
How do educators encourage an interest in plants through art?
These topics and more are explored at ArtPlantae in the Plants Everyday section that focuses on the casual way plants weave in and out of our lives. Included here are special projects such as Plants, Life, Riverside, an interpretive project about plants in an urban setting.
Topics related to plant-based education, botanical art and the links between drawing and knowing (knowing plants, specifically) are explored through the teaching and learning column. The purpose of this column is to connect artists, naturalists and educators so they can learn from each other and apply what they learn in their own classrooms and programs.

ArtPlantae managed ArtPlantae Books from 2006-2013. It now manages a much smaller specialty shop. Here you will find independent titles such as exhibition catalogs of contemporary botanical art by the American Society of Botanical Artists and monumental global studies like Conifers Around the World.
As an independent small business and former member of the American Booksellers Association, ArtPlantae is a supporter of independent bookstores. It will continue to bring attention to interesting and helpful resources as an IndieBound affiliate. For each purchase made online at IndieBound or independent bookstores through ArtPlantae’s IndieBound links, ArtPlantae receives a small portion of each sale. Proceeds benefit ArtPlantae’s InterpretPlants™ program.
