Dr. Debons received her Ph.D. in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University. She graduated from the diploma course in Botanical Painting at the English Gardening School in 2005. Dr. Debons invites you to join her painting workshops this Fall.

    Botanical Illustration – Tuesdays, September 25, 2012 – October 30, 2012; 6:30 – 9:30 PM. Learn the fundamental techniques of botanical drawing and painting in straightforward steps. Be introduced art supplies used by botanical illustrators, drawing techniques, color mixing techniques and more. Art supplies are included. A materials list for additional supplies will be distributed at the first class meeting. Cost: $99. Non-credit. Limit: 8. Location: Central Oregon Community College (COCC).     Botanical Painting
    – The weekend class is for beginners and advanced students in botanical art. Beginners will learn how to begin a botanical drawing and painting. Advanced students have the option of beginning a new project or working on an existing project. Supplies will be provided for beginners. Cost: $120 for the two-day workshop; $70 for a one-day workshop. For more information and to register, contact Jeanne. This workshop will be held on the following dates:

Natural History Journals

Folded books by artist Andie Thrams are on view at the Rowboat Gallery in Oregon. The collection on view was inspired by Andie’s field studies and creative projects.

Also on view are the rattan forms of basket maker and mixed media artist, Shannon Weber.

Both exhibitions can be enjoyed through September 3, 2012.

Hoyt Arboretum

A 187-acre arboretum with 21 trails totaling 12 miles in length. Home to a collection of more than 1,000 species of trees and other plants. Researchers have kept continuous records of the plants growing in the arboretum. The Hoyt Arboretum Plant Inventory Guide has information on over 8,000 plants. It is available to the public for free.

Botanical Painting

August 4-5, 2012
10 AM – 4 PM

Artists ages 14 and up will learn how to paint plants and other natural subjects. Participants will learn drawing and painting techniques, composition techniques, color matching, and color mixing. All levels welcome. Experienced students will work on specific advanced skills. Supply list will be provided. Cost: $110, plus a $10 materials fees to be paid to instructor.

The Art of Science
Bush Barn Gallery

On Friday, members of the newly formed Oregon group of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) will launch The Art of Science at the Bush Barn Gallery in Salem, Oregon. This exhibition is the group’s first juried exhibition.

A panel discussion with group members and biologist, David Craig, will be held on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 5:30 PM. The panel will discuss the field of scientific illustration and how illustrators work. Artists participating in the panel discussion are: Rebecca Brown-Thompson, Kristie Potwora, Jeanne Debons, Barbara Gleason, Kris Kirkeby and Cynthis Kranch. This discussion is open to members of the Salem Art Association and their guests. Wine, appetizers and entertainment will follow. To become a member of the Salem Art Association, complete a membership application online.

Botanical Illustration
Begin with a sketch of your favorite flower and leave with a 12″ x 18″ illustration ready for framing. This class repeats for four Tuesdays through September. Students work in colored pencil or India ink. Project changes each time the class is taught. Cost: $18 nonmembers, $15 members per session. Register online
