Botanist and botanical illustrator, Jeanne Debons, teaches small student-focused painting workshops at her Oregon studio. Dr. Debons received her Ph.D. in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University. She graduated from the diploma course in Botanical Painting at the English Gardening School in 2005. Dr. Debons invites you to join her painting workshops this Spring.

Botanical Painting Workshop
Saturday & Sunday, June 16-17, 2012
Learn the fundamentals of botanical painting in watercolor or work on specific more advanced skills. Small classes mean we cover what you would like to learn. Either work with the class on a specific skill or progress one of your own. Subjects include: an introduction to necessary supplies, drawing and painting techniques, composition, choosing and mixing colors, creating colors, and more. This is an opportunity to learn the techniques required to capture flowers and other natural objects on paper in a series of straightforward steps. Supplies will be provided for beginners. Cost: $120 for both days or $65 for one day.

Quinn is an artist, a musician, and a graduate of the Natural Science Illustration Program at the University of Washington. His specialties include wild cats, raptors, wild edible plants, and medicinal plants. His chosen media are graphite, watercolor, gouache, colored pencil, and photography. He teaches workshops in botanical illustration in Washington, Oregon and Colorado.
Introduction to Botanical Illustration – July 11, 2012. This workshop introduces students to the practices of botanical illustration from a natural science perspective. We will be primarily working with black & white mediums using graphite and pen & ink. Some color theory and mediums (i.e., colored pencil) will be introduced. Draw northwest flora while learning classification and identification. Some drawing experience is helpful and this course is open to all skill levels.

A 16-acre garden in southeast Portland. Formerly the private garden of botanist Lilia Leach and her husband pharmacist John Leach, the garden features over 2,000 species of plants and hosts special events and workshops year-round.

Botanical Illustration – This one-day class for adults is taught every Tuesday from May 1 – October 30, 1-3 PM. Class will be taught under the Meadow Tent. Instructor Jane Nash will teach participants how to turn a pencil sketch into a finished colored pencil painting. Supplies are provided. Pre-registration is required. Kids Nature Illustration – This one-day class for children ages 9-14 is taught every Tuesday from June 19 – August 28, 2012, 8:30 – 11:30 AM. Children will learn how to observe plants and how to draw them using pencil, drawing pens and other media. Pre-registration is required. Cost: $15 per class non-members, $13 per class members.

- The Artful Cookbook: Celebrating Food, Community & Story

Bring cookbooks, treasured recipes, photographs, poems and other food-related memorabilia to use as inspiration. Participants will collage, paint, write and draw to create layers of embellished imagery within a series of projects on paper. Share meals and stories with fellow participants, sprinkle herbs and spices into your paintings and onto your food, savor flavors and ideas, while creating recipe-inspired art. Andie will demonstrate her ever-evolving field techniques for working in layers to capture light, color, gesture and detail, evoking what is seen and felt under the trees. Working indoors and out, through sequenced studies, participants will create images revealing their own responses to the unique complexity of wild forests. Participants will complete a series of forest-inspired mixed media drawings and paintings. Location: Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, Otis, Oregon. Cost: $415. During forays into Hoyt Arboretum, participants will collect leaves and inspiration for studio work. Learn how to paint the thousand ambers, crimsons and rusts of Fall while building layers of watercolor, gouache and colored pencil to capture glow and detail.
