I am scheduled to graduate from The University of Georgia in May 2009 with a BFA in painting. I have always been interested in scientific illustration and botanical art. Now that I have nearly completed my degree in painting, I would like to actually pursue some sort of formal study of botanical illustration. I have also made plans to move to Hawaii in July 2009, so if there is a program which would allow me to earn a degree in scientific illustration of any kind in Hawaii, I am totally interested. Is this website promoting such a program in Hawaii?
As someone who is interested in scientific illustration, you must visit the website of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators at http://www.gnsi.org. Here you can learn more about the Guild, their listserv, their summer workshops, and their annual conference. The Guild is a wonderful organization and their week-long conferences are fantastic.
As for botanical illustration, there are classes and programs across the U.S. (see the “Classes Near You” section). With respect to Hawaii, there will be a workshop there this summer that will be lead by Wendy Hollender of WH Art & Design (see post on 3/9/09). Wendy is also the Program Coordinator for the Botanical Art & Natural Science Illustration Certificate Program at the New York Botanical Garden. Go to http://www.nybg.org to learn more about this extensive program.
